A first haircut is a lovely little milestone, and, for a lot of parents, a slightly nervous one. Will they sit still? Will there be tears? The good news is that with a bit of preparation, and a salon that is used to little ones, it is usually far easier and happier than you expect. Here is how we make first haircuts calm and fuss-free at our Uckfield salon.
When should a child have their first haircut?
There is no set age, every child is different. Some have a full head of hair by one and are ready long before their first birthday, others barely need a trim until they are two or three. A good sign it is time is hair that is falling in their eyes, getting knotty, or growing unevenly. There is no rush, and no wrong answer.
How to prepare at home
- Book a time of day when they are usually happy and well-rested, not near nap time
- Talk about it beforehand in a positive, exciting way
- Bring a favourite toy, comforter or a tablet with a show they love
- Let them watch you or a sibling have a haircut first if you can
- Have a snack ready, a happy tummy makes for a happy chair
What happens at the appointment
Little ones are welcome to sit on your lap for their first haircut, whatever helps them feel safe. We go gently and at their pace, showing them the comb and telling them what we are doing as we go. Most of the time is spent making them comfortable, the actual cut is quick. And if today is not the day, that is completely fine, we would always rather stop than push a nervous child.
