Balayage is one of the most requested looks we do, soft, sun-kissed colour that grows out beautifully. It is also one people most often ask about on price, because the cost can vary quite a lot. Here is an honest guide to what balayage costs at our Uckfield salon, what changes the price, and how to make it last.

A quick reminder of what balayage is

Balayage is a freehand colour technique, colour is painted onto the surface of the hair to create a soft, natural gradient that is lighter towards the ends. Because there is no harsh regrowth line, it is lower maintenance than traditional highlights. If you are new to it, our guide to everything you need to know before balayage is a lovely place to start.

So how much does balayage cost?

At our Uckfield salon, balayage starts from £101, and usually includes a toner and a blow dry finish. Where you land above that depends mostly on how much hair you have and how much lift it needs. It is a longer appointment than a simple colour, often around three hours, because the painting and developing take time and care.

What affects the price

  • The length and thickness of your hair, longer hair takes more product and time
  • Whether it is a full balayage or a softer, partial face-frame
  • Your starting colour and how much lift is needed to reach the look
  • The toner or gloss used to perfect the final shade
  • Whether a bond-building treatment is added to protect the hair

Balayage or highlights, which is better value?

Balayage often works out kinder over a year, not because a single appointment is cheaper, but because it grows out so softly that you need it done less often. Traditional highlights give a more uniform, all-over brightness but usually need topping up more frequently. If you would like to compare, our guide to what full head highlights cost breaks that down.

Making your balayage last

  • Use a sulphate-free, colour-care shampoo and conditioner
  • Add a purple shampoo now and then to keep blonde tones cool
  • Book a toner or gloss between appointments to refresh the shade
  • Use a weekly bond or moisture treatment to keep lightened ends strong
  • Protect your hair from heat with a heat protectant before styling
